1. Restrains Movement (Prevents Ejection)
In a crash, your body keeps moving due to inertia.
The seat belt holds your body in place and prevents you from being thrown forward or out of the vehicle.
2. Spreads Force Over Stronger Parts of the Body
A three-point seat belt distributes the force of a crash across your chest, shoulders, and pelvis, which are better at withstanding impact.
3. Slows Down Your Body Gradually
Instead of an abrupt stop, the seat belt slows you down over a slightly longer time and distance, reducing the peak force on your body.
4. Retractor Mechanism (Spring + Locking)
The belt is wound on a spring-loaded spool, which lets you move freely during normal driving.
In a sudden stop or crash, a sensor locks the spool, preventing further belt extension—this is called a "retractor lock".
5. Pretensioners (in modern cars)
Pretensioners instantly tighten the belt when a crash is detected, removing slack and securing the occupant firmly before the major impact.
